What Are Pine Bark Beetles?

Adult beetles bore through the outer bark and create tunnels within the tree’s inner bark, where they lay their eggs. As larvae develop, they feed beneath the bark, creating additional galleries that interfere with the movement of water and nutrients between the roots and the canopy.


Healthy trees can often defend themselves by producing resin that helps push invading beetles out of the entry holes. However, trees that are already under stress may not be able to mount the same level of defense.

Signs of Pine Bark Beetle Activity

Early detection is critical because much of the damage occurs beneath the bark before symptoms become obvious.


Some of the most common warning signs include small, round entry holes in the bark, often accompanied by tubes or globs of sticky resin where the tree attempted to repel the insects. Fine, reddish-brown sawdust may accumulate in bark crevices, around the base of the trunk, or on nearby vegetation as beetles tunnel into the tree.


As the infestation progresses, needles may gradually change from healthy green to yellow, then reddish-brown. Sections of bark may begin to loosen or fall away, exposing the distinctive winding galleries created by adult beetles and developing larvae beneath the surface.


Woodpecker activity can also increase on infested trees, as the birds search for larvae beneath the bark.

Once bark beetles have extensively colonized a tree, recovery becomes increasingly difficult. The tunnels created beneath the bark interrupt the tree’s vascular system, reducing its ability to transport water and nutrients.
